Dental and Periodontal Exams

Holistic Oral Health Assessment

What is a dental exam??

A dental exam, commonly known as dental check-up, is a complete assessment of your oral health, which focuses on your extraoral and intraoral structures. These routine exams are usually performed by dentists to observe and maintain your oral health.

What occurs during a dental exam?

Oral and Health History Review: In order to understand and determine any changes, concerns or symptoms in your oral health, the dentist will review your medical and dental history. Extra oral and TMJ exam: A palpation exam will be performed by your dental clinician. This is performed to ensure the health of TMJ (Temporomandibular joint) and palpate for any lumps and bumps around lymph nodes. Dental Examination: A visual inspection of your mouth will be done to find out any signs of teeth cavities, damage or abnormalities. Your dental clinician will also perform oral cancer screening at the same time. X-rays: X-rays are required to detect any carious lessons (decay), any abscesses or infections that might be present. The dentist may take the x-ray to reveal the hidden dental issues or position of unerupted teeth for example impacted wisdom teeth. Bite and Jaw Assessment: The dentist will assess your bite. The condition of any prior dental work, such as crowns or fillings, will also be checked.

What occurs during periodontal exams?

Gum measurements: To help in detecting gum diseases, a probe is used to measure the size of the pockets that surround your teeth. At your first visit at Clean Smiles Dental Hygiene Clinic, we will take baseline measurements (periodontal probing) at this visit. We reassess these measurements at your subsequent visits to make sure the bone levels and integrity of your periodontal structures is maintained. Assessment of Gum Tissue: During this phase, your dentist carefully inspects your gums for any signs of inflammation, bleeding, or recession. Healthy gums should have pink coloration and a firm texture. Plaque and Tartar Removal: A thorough cleaning may be performed followed by periodontal exam to remove plaque and tartar present on your teeth and below the gum line.

What makes dental and periodontal exams important?

To prevent the oral issues, ensuring early detection, and permitting less intrusive treatments, routine dental and periodontal check-ups are essential. These exams including oral cancer screening are vital components to provide timely treatment if needed, or to maintain optimal oral health. Also, these examinations might identify underlying health conditions like diabetes or vitamin deficiencies that may show up as oral symptoms. Dentists usually suggest that dental check-ups should be done yearly or in every six months, depending on your own specific oral health requirements or concerns. Your dentist might advise more frequent visits. Maintaining dental health and overall health requires these examinations.
